✚Helpful Hints - #4

HEALTH and WELLNESS
MARGARINE OR BUTTER?... THAT IS THE QUESTION.
Butter is better. Christopher Wanjek is the author of Food at Work, and he says this myth came about in the 1960s when doctors started to look at the link between cholesterol and heart disease. Research has come a long way since then, and we now know that the trans-fats in margarine raise bad cholesterol levels, and lower good ones. So, between the two, butter is the better choice.

STAYING HEALTHY
If you want to stay healthy, keep washing your hands. In a study at Annapolis Naval Academy, when Navy recruits washed their hands at least five times a day, they cut the rate of colds and flu by 45%. But you have to do it right turn the water on as hot as you can stand it, and wash your hands with soap and water for about as long as it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" to yourself.

BEAUTY and FASHION
DE-STAIN YOUR NAILS IN SECONDS!Wearing dark nail polish colors can be fun, but the heavy pigments can stain your nails - even if you're wearing a base coat.  If that happens, just dab a cotton pad in lemon juice and rub over your nails for a natural stain remover that'll leave your nails naturally pretty!

GET THE PERFECT HEM ON JEANS!
Before you hem a new pair of jeans, wash and dry them once to make sure they're "preshrunk," then shorten to the perfect length.

HOME and AUTO
SAVE GAS - DON'T HURRY TO THE NEXT STOPLIGHT!
Do not attain speed unless there is room to use the momentum. If there is another stop light, traffic, etc, in the short distance, there is no benefit to attaining speed. Why pay for acceleration only to brake and waste the acceleration and gasoline required to attain speed?

HOW TO KEEP A LAWN LOVELY
from Forbidden Advice
Use these maintenance tips from the people who keep golf course greens looking pristine:
• Lawns mown in the same direction every time develop stripes that may grow back irregularly. Alternate mowing one way across the lawn the first time and then at right angles to this direction the next time. If you are really keen, follow the diagonals, too.
• For the best cut, mow in mid to late morning, when it’s cool but the morning dew has dried off.
• Don’t rush mowing, because you may miss spots.
• Using a sit-on mower, keep the mower at a medium speed. Throttle down to lower speeds when turning corners and trimming borders for a closer cut.
• For a healthy lawn, never remove more than a third of the grass blade at one time.
• Grass no less than 1-inch high usually looks better, encourages a deeper root system and helps to prevent weeds and moss from invading.
• Sharp lawnmower blades help to create a well-manicured lawn, and cleaner cuts promote healthier grass. Use a metal file or a grinding wheel to sharpen the blade, maintaining the blade-surface angle that came from the manufacturer.

FOOD and DRINK
COFFEE - HALTS HEART ATTACKS!
A study of more than 86,200 women found that those who drank at least two cups of coffee a day were 25% less likely to have a fatal heart attack than non-coffee drinkers, reports the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Other research proves that a hefty mug of joe makes you less prone to diabetes, gall-stones, colon cancer, liver disease and Parkinson's disease too!  "Credit goes to the brew's plant phenols, antioxidants found in regular and decaf coffee," says Dr. Kulze.

SAFE FOOD PREP DO'S AND DON'TS
Proper food preparation is always important, but it’s especially critical in the summer when warm temperatures inside and out can turn the ingredients for a barbecue into a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
Don’t let food poisoning ruin your party—follow these tips before you get cooking:

DON’T thaw food at room temperature. Germs and bacteria that can cause food poisoning thrive as the temperature of food increases.
DO thaw food in the refrigerator, microwave, or under cold water.
DON’T wash poultry or meat before preparing it. You’ll spread potentially harmful bacteria all over your kitchen.
DO wash your hands with soap and warm water before preparing food and after handling meat, chicken, eggs, and seafood.
DON’T rely on taste or smell to determine whether food has gone bad. The bacteria that causes food poisoning is tasteless and odorless and even a small amount can make you sick.
DO toss anything you suspect might have gone bad
DON’T allow food to cool before refrigerating. Room temperature food is like an unlimited buffet for bacteria.
DO refrigerate food as soon as possible, and always within two hours of cooking.
DON’T marinate meat, fish, or poultry at room temperature. Remember the unlimited buffet?
DO marinate in the refrigerator and always cook poultry, meat, seafood, and eggs thoroughly to destroy dangerous bacteria

    PETS AND ANIMALS
SLIM DOWN A CHUBBY PUP FOR LESS
You know Fido is getting pudgy, but scaling back his rations leaves him begging for more.  To slim him down while satisfying his appetite, a suggestion made by a vet said to gradually substitute 1/3 of his usual food portion (wet or dry) with canned pure pumpkin.  The low-cal additon is high in fiber, which will prevent hunger pangs - and dogs love the slightly sweet taste.

    REMEDY FOR AN UPSET STOMACH
For an upset doggie stomach, Pepto-Bismol works wonders. You’ll want to give your dog a child’s dose for every 40 pounds. So if the dog’s 10 pounds they get a quarter of a child’s dose, if the dog’s 80 pounds, it’s a double child’s dose. NEVER give Pepto-Bismol to cats; it contains an aspirin like substance that they can’t tolerate.

    MONEY and FINANCE
    TURN YOUR CLUTTER INTO CASH!
If your shelves are overflowing with books, consider trading them in at Cash4Books.net or Bookjingle.com.  Just enter the ISBN numbers, and the site will list their offer.  They'll even give you a free FedEx shipping label if you're selling five books or more.   Prices very depending on supply and demand - the popular Dan Brown novel Deception Point will earn you 50 cents, whilke the textbook Conceptual Physics will get you $37.14.  Think your books are worth more?  Try amazon.com.  There, you can list the same Dan Brown book for $10.88 and the textbook for $154.  The drawback:  you have to wait for the items to sell.

Would a Spider or Butterfly Grab Your Attention First?
So, if a spider and a butterfly were coming toward you, which would grab your attention first? You might think the spider – since they can be dangerous, but a new study in Australia says that’s true only if you’re afraid of spiders. Otherwise, most people would notice the butterfly first, because of its bright colors and quick, eye-catching movements.
