  • 1903, The Wright Brothers made their first powered airplane flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  The aircraft flew for only 12 seconds, but it was enough to launch the aviation age.
  • 1977, John Travolta danced his way through Saturday Night Fever, which was released.  According to Robin Gibb of The Bee Gees, they didn't know anything about disco when they wrote the hit soundtrack.  They thought the songs sounded like soul!

  • 1940, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz eloped!  In 1951, when Ball moved her radio show My Favorite Husband to TV, she insisted that Arnaz play the title role - and I Love Lucy was born!
  • 1925, The Grand Ole Opry debuted on Nashville radio.  It was called "Barn Dance" until 1927, when announcer George D. Hay spontaneously nicknamed it "The Grand Ole Opry"!
  • 1929, Struggling toy salesman Edwin Lowe created Bingo after seeing an Italian carnival game where the winner shouted "Beano!"  When Lowe tested his version, the nervous winner mistakenly yelled "Bingo!" and the game was renamed!
  • 1871, Verdi's opera Aida premiered in Egypt to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal.  The critically acclaimed story of forbidden love was modernized in 2000, when Elton John wrote the Broadway version!
